AboutHelen Grogan (born 1979, Australia) is an artist working conceptual through performance, exhibition, and documentation practices for over two decades. She foregrounds working processes as a critical strategies, integrating choreographic methods and concepts within her professional roles as artist, curator, and collaborative advisor for time-based practice and its legacies. Helen’s art practice was awarded a 2025 Samstag International Visual Art scholarship, supporting research on the processual dimensions of performative contemporary artistic and curatorial works, and their institutional documentation.

Helen’s artistic practice has been presented by institutions in Oceania and Europe, including the Art Gallery of New South Wales, Knulp, Biennale of Sydney and Serial Space (Eora/Sydney); Ian Potter Museum of Art, Australian Centre for Contemporary Art, National Gallery of Victoria, Gertrude Contemporary, Center for Contemporary Photography, Sutton Gallery, and Liquid Architecture (Naarm/Melbourne); Samstag Museum of Art and Adelaide Festival (Tarntanya/Adelaide); Rijksakademie (Amsterdam); Netherlands Institute of Architecture (Rotterdam); HAU Hebbel am Ufer, and Kontex Festival (Berlin); Galerie Stadtpark (Krems); and Tbilisi Triennial (Rustavi).

Helen is Associate Curator, Archive, at Liquid Architecture and Vice Chair of the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Committee of the International Association for Sound and Audiovisual Archives (IASA) and leads IASA’s first conference accessibility initiative. In 2023 she presented research around preserving Liquid Architecture’s legacy of sound art at Istanbul University for the 2023 IASA Conference.

Grogan holds qualifications in philosophy, choreography, dance, and visual art as an alumna of the University of Melbourne, Amsterdam University of the Arts, City University of New York, and Deakin University. In 2019 her practice-led research was awarded the Jennifer Bowskill Photography Award from the Victorian College of the Arts, University of Melbourne. She was the 2017 recipient of RMIT’s International Artist in Residency, Austria, which led to the solo exhibition and publication ‘Up to and Including’ with Galerie Stadtpark. She is a Gertrude Contemporary Studio Artist alumna (2015-2017). While at the School for New Dance Development, Amsterdam (2002-2006), she received the Hanny Velkmap Scholarship.

Since 2023, Helen has investigated practice-focused approaches to intangible contemporary art heritage, engaging with significant international precedents at De Appel Archive (Amsterdam) and The Kitchen Archive (New York City). This ongoing research examines such archives as stewardship systems that evolve through praxical curatorial methods and artist-driven ontologies. It considers how the (processual) politics of these artist-led organisations are situated within and transmitted through these processes. Together with The Kitchen Archivist, Alex Waterman, Grogan devised and developed the initiative: The Kitchen Archive Fellowship, which continues to support technical and conceptual developments in The Kitchen Archive. This project drew on Grogan’s time at The Kitchen decades earlier (2001-2002), when she acted as assistant to Kristina Yang, The Kitchen’s first New Media Arts Curator and worked on description, digitisation, and collection engagement in The Kitchen Archive. More recently, Helen’s experience in contemporary art documentation and stewardship includes projects with Naarm/Melbourne-based arts organisations such as Liquid Architecture, Performance Review, Gertrude Contemporary, Australian Centre for Contemporary Art, West Space, BalletLab and Dance Massive. She has collaborated on related projects with curators Hannah Mathews, Jared Davis, and Joanna Kitto, and choreographers Shelley Lasica, Phillip Adams, Andrea Ines, and (research with) Jo Lloyd.

In 2022, Helen set up OPEN PRACTICE STUDIO, as a framework for working with other artists, curators and arts organisations in an advisory, consulting or research capacity, collaboratively. Helen’s OPS practice draws on her attention to and capacity for complex and nuanced problems of practice, across diverse professional contexts. This includes working directly with artists on studio processes and conceptual frameworks, documentation strategies for independent arts organisations, and dramaturgy for exhibitions and symposia. Currently, projects support performance exhibitions and installations, dance writing, sonic arts, social practice, and public discussion programs.

About
Helen Grogan (b. 1979) is an artist working through performance, exhibition, and documentation practices, conceptually, as critical, processual strategies. Her work often engages and re-stages the working processes of practice—sometimes her own, and at other times the practices of the institutions or communities she works within—addressing peripheral or otherwise underseen activities and relations in these contexts.

In 2025, she was awarded the Samstag International Visual Arts Scholarship (2026–2027) to investigate the ways processual artistic practices may operate through and against institutional documentation as forms of connection and resistance.

Her work has been presented in institutional and independent contexts, including the Art Gallery of New South Wales, Knulp, Biennale of Sydney and Serial Space (Eora/Sydney); Ian Potter Museum of Art, Australian Centre for Contemporary Art, National Gallery of Victoria, Gertrude Contemporary, Center for Contemporary Photography, Sutton Gallery, and Liquid Architecture (Naarm/Melbourne); Samstag Museum of Art and Adelaide Festival (Tarntanya/Adelaide); Rijksakademie; Netherlands Institute of Architecture; HAU Hebbel am Ufer, and Kontex Festival; Galerie Stadtpark; and Tbilisi Triennial (Rustavi) and in publications by Perimeter Books and SCHLEBRÜGGE.EDITOR.

Helen moves between professional roles as artist, curator, and lecturer, and also collaborates on curation–conservation initiatives. She is Associate Curator-Archivist for the sound art organisation Liquid Architecture. As a lecturer, supervisor, and assessor, her work supports contemporary art as a transdisciplinary field. Her curatorial work includes Specific Inbetween (Australian Centre for Contemporary Art), Feedback Projected (Gertrude Contemporary), the art space Open Archive (co-directed with Jared Davis), and projects with Joanna Kitto and John Nixon.

Helen holds qualifications in philosophy, choreography, dance, and visual art as an alumna of the University of Melbourne, Amsterdam University of the Arts, City University of New York, and Deakin University. In 2019 her practice-led research was awarded the Jennifer Bowskill Photography Award from the Victorian College of the Arts, University of Melbourne. Since 2023, she has investigated artist-led archives as relational and connective systems, spending time with De Appel Archive (Amsterdam) and The Kitchen Archive (New York City). This work considers how the (processual) politics of these artist-led organisations are themselves stewarded and transmitted through embodied processes. From Zara Sigglekow’s catalogue essay:

Helen Grogan’s practice is concerned with systems of observing, sensing, and locating. She is hyper-aware of the ethical tensions of the subject viewing an object, an audience viewing a performer, and seeks to disrupt this relationship that can be fraught with power imbalance. ‘splitting open the surface on which it is inscribed’ (2018) is an exploration of the agency of an object. That is, how to work with an object with limited subjective impact and reveal its materiality and agency, encourage a more sympathetic relationship between viewer and artwork, and the place/architecture within which it sits.
The work consists of a 15 minute choreographic score, enacted for three different restrictive camera views and a detailed stereo audio recording. A thin mirror-finish steel disk is forged, folded, and pressed by the score participant Shelley Lasica, revealing both resistance to her actions, and compliance to her force. The manner in which Lasica undertakes her actions is sympathetic and adaptive to the object’s response. All the while, the surface reflects the room, actions, and apparatus around it. The visual replay of this event within the exhibition is fractured and dispersed across three screens, while the sonic re-articulation manifests as a synchronised real time diegetic audio recording. The sum of this effect is the creation of an embodied sensorial empathy between viewer, artwork, and gallery space in which it sits.

Witness Report for Nell (Perpetual Vessel, Work Floor Repository) (2023 - 2025)
sonic field recording simulation, research photographs and video, devised for de Appel online.

This project is currently in technical development. It began upon invitation to contribute to the ‘Witness Reports’ within de Appel Archive, an initiative by Nell Donkers, Curator Archive, de Appel.

	further project details:
Sonic and video recordings were collected during a four-week research at the de Appel Archive in 2023, just prior to the institution’s relocation from Schipluidenlaan 12. That adjacent research focused on relational and responsive documentation strategies within de Appel’s archive processes and curation.
A sonic work is central to the project, and not currently presented on this website. Field recordings captured within the physical space of the archive are processed into a continuous, simulated soundscape of the Schipluidenlaan site, with technical assistance from Daniel Jenatsch. These recordings register both interior and peripheral events from that period—including sounds from a nearby construction site and children’s play equipment.

In the context of imminent relocation, this witness report considers how sensibilities endure through situated experience and embodied processes. The broader research explored relational and responsive strategies within de Appel’s archive and its evolving engagement with artists’ practices.

The artist acknowledges the direct support of IG Bildende Kunst staff in the development and presentation of this project, which evolved through embedded engagement with the organisation and an on-site residency. Since 1956, IG Bildende Kunst has represented the interests of visual artists in arts policy, social, economic, legal, and other professional matters. This project incorporates the IG Bildende Kunst board meeting table, assembled and disassembled by IG Bildende Kunst curator and board member Vasilena Gankovska, together with the artist. At the time of this project, this trestle table was used on site multiple times a month to facilitate informal gatherings of artists, curators, museum directors, gallerists, and other cultural workers in response to escalating far-right policies impacting Austrian culture, society, law, and international relations.

From Sarinah Masukor’s catalogue essay: Things left behind expresses the mood of Helen Grogan’s spillover (2021), the work at the centre of SCA and the periphery of KNULP. Grogan is interested in the present and near past of a site, often using the time of installation and the duration of exhibition as material. The title describes something that doesn’t fit inside its container, and the work at KNULP, a small iPad placed low on the wall beside the window, cycles slowly through a series of shots of the SCA courtyard, the scenes mostly captured through their reflection in another, larger screen, positioned beside the SCA Gallery entrance. In the SCA Gallery, she’s wrapped a flimsy black plastic pole and ribbed ribbon barrier around the centre display walls of the gallery, cordoning off three large flat screens held in polystyrene protectors. One is covered, no draped, in that sroject of Grogan’s – has a small moving image playing on it. The moving image shows a similar and sometimes the same view of the courtyard as the screen at KNULP. Reflected in the screen installed by the university on the courtyard wall, two chairs sit empty. The glare of sun on screen makes the edges of the chairs glow.“The exhibition Transplant was conceived as a collaboration between the independent artist space KNULP in Sydney's Camperdown, and Sydney College of the Arts (SCA) gallery, at the University of Sydney. Part of the underlying though not explicit mandate of the exhibition was to highlight the seminal role independent art spaces play in the creation and not just presentation, of contemporary culture locally (and around the world).
